A woman who has worked for many years in Grande Prairie’s non-profit sector has been recognized for her work in getting the Sex Trade Offender Program started.

The program was created to reduce harm inflicted via the sex trade.

PACE Executive Director Jacquie Aitken-Kish is being called a driving force behind getting this program operational.

“There are so many good people in this community that are working to deal with abuse. Our needs are too high. When you start looking at things like sexual abuse and intimate partner violence there are higher rates in northern rural communities.”

Superintendent Don McKenna says there isn’t a more deserving person to be honour after her countless hours of dedication to help those affected by the sex trade.

“I think a lot of these people including clients, don’t realize how vulnerable sex trade workers are, how disenfranchised, and what their reasons are for being in that line of work. I have never met anybody who has said, ‘I want to get into the sex trade worker that sounds like a really good thing,’ it isn’t, it’s terrible.”

Aitken-Kish was presented with a plaque Wednesday at the RCMP detachment.
