Man with stolen semi leads police on destructive chase

Aug 20, 2018 | 4:54 PM

A Grande Prairie man faces a number of charges after RCMP say he stole a bobtail (no trailer attached) semi truck and led them on a chase and damaged a lot of property along the way.

Local police were called just before 9 p.m. Saturday for complaints about the erratic driver in the area of Highway 43 and Richmond Hill.  They first located the suspect vehicle in Grande Prairie in the area of 71st Avenue.  The vehicle evaded police by driving through a playground and then through a field.  It then reportedly drove dangerously through residential areas and caused damage to several fences.

RCMP tried to stop the semi again in the area of 92 St. and 158 Ave, but it evaded police again.  Out of concern for the safety of the public, the RCMP initiated a pursuit with the suspect vehicle.

The pursuit continued through Clairmont, where the suspect drove through a fence into a field east of the hamlet.  The suspect fled on foot but was quickly caught with help from the Police Dog Service.

36-year-old Scott McKay of Grande Prairie, faces 20 charges:

         Dangerous Driving x 3
         Flight from police x 2
         Assault Peace Officer x 2
         Resist Arrest
Possess weapon for a dangerous purpose

         Theft of Motor Vehicle
         Possession of a controlled substance
         Operate motor vehicle while disqualified
         Mischief under $5000 x 4
Fail to comply with probation order x 3

McKay remains behind bars.  He is due in Grande Prairie Provincial Court August 22.
