Legion to celebrate first responders on Saturday

Sep 14, 2018 | 5:30 AM

A first of its kind in Grande Prairie, First Responders Appreciation Day is being held tomorrow.

A parade from the Farmers Market to the Legion will kick things off along with the proclamation of Veteran’s Way at noon.  There will be a mock accident at 3:30 p.m.

“It’s basically an educational day that we have planned for the youth to come and see exactly what the first responders are responsible for,” explained Barry Lazoruk with the Royal Canadian Legion in Grande Prairie.  “What the rolls are for the firefighters and the RCMP and STARS, EMS and the triage unit and how they work together when an accident happens.”

There will be free hamburgers and hotdogs, kids’ games and prizes.

Lazoruk says this is the first time they have done a recognition day like this, but they hope to make it an annual event.

“A lot of people don’t realize that our first responders go through some of the tremendous turmoil that our veterans do, and we recognize our veterans and we thought it would only be fitting that we recognize first responders too.”

There is also a VIP banquet, prime rib dinner, and dance later Saturday.  Tickets are $40.  First responders get in free.
