Grande Prairie to host Super Red volleyball tournament this weekend

Sep 21, 2018 | 7:53 AM

A massive volleyball tournament is set to get underway in Grande Prairie this weekend.

GPRC Fitness Centre Coordinator for the GPRC Matt Clague explained the magnitude of the tournament.

“Traditionally we ran the Big Red and the Little Red, which were our senior and junior high tournaments. For numerous reasons and availability of our teams and what not we decided to mash them all together into one big tournament. 108 teams will be playing this weekend.”

The 108 teams will be travelling from all over the region according to Clague.

“We have teams from as far North as Worsley and Manning, that area. We have teams coming from Edson. Parkland Composite High is coming. We have a few teams coming from Prince George. Dawson Creek & Fort St.John are sending teams as well, and obviously the local teams from Grande Prairie as well.”

Team Canada player Dani Smith remembers playing in the tournament’s predecessors, the Big Red and Little Red, when she was growing up in Beaverlodge.

“Oh, it was so exciting! It was the first big tournament of the season and you had your new team. For me, I was always just watching the college players at GPRC and wanting to think about where I was going to go play when I graduated. It was just such a fun opportunity to see all the players because I was in all the GPRC summer camps and all the other summer camps all over Alberta when I was growing up, too.”

The tournament begins today and runs all weekend throughout the city.

Smith and Team Canada will be playing in the women’s world championship, starting next weekend in Japan.
