Sep 24, 2018 | 7:19 AM

Opening weekend in the North West Junior Hockey League 2018-2019 regular season came to a close Sunday afternoon.

The Sexsmith Vipers hosted the JDA County Kings, with the home side coming out on top with a 2-1 victory.

Kings Captain Austin Hrehoruk opened the scoring 1:57 into the 2nd period, but less than three minutes later the Vipers would even it up thanks to a marker from Blain Moskalyk.

The game-winner would come with 4:15 left in the middle stanza as Payton Lappenbush tickled the twine for his first of the campaign to put the Vipers on top 2-1.

Sexsmith earned their first win of the season despite being outshot 43-32.

All 6 teams in the NWJHL will now have some time off before returning to the ice.

They will all be in action on Friday when Dawson Creek visits the Navigators, Sexsmith hosts Fort St.John, and the County Kings welcome Fairview.
