Municipalities to receive some money back ahead of pot legalization

Sep 27, 2018 | 3:59 PM

Alberta municipalities will be getting some money back from the province to help pay for costs they’ve acquired to get things in order before cannabis becomes legal next month.

Premier Rachel Notley made the announcement at the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association convention Thursday.

According to City of Grande Prairie Councillor Kevin O’Toole, the city has spent about $160,000 ahead of the legalization of recreational marijuana.

“We had to deal with three levels of government, so there were some challenges there, some timelines that had to be met, and some overtime that had to be incurred,” he said.

O’Toole says they don’t know exactly how much money each municipality will get back, but they were guaranteed a reimbursement of some kind.

Grande Prairie’s city councillors, along with Mayor Bill Given, Interim City Manager Horatio Galanti and Chief of Staff Shane Bourke are all in Red Deer for the AUMA conference which wraps up Friday.
