Alberta RCMP promote #OperationImpact this weekend

Oct 5, 2018 | 5:30 AM

Whether you’re going near or far for turkey this weekend, Alberta RCMP is encouraging both pedestrians and motorists to be cautious and arrive safely.

Constable Mike Hibbs, with RCMP Integrated Traffic Services, says this weekend across Canada they’re launching their #OperationImpact awareness campaign.

“The object of #OperationImpact is to promote safety on our highways,” he says.  “Basically. what we are going to be doing all weekend is doing check stops, enforcing seatbelts, speeding, impaired operation, and intersection safety as well.

He says they will also be watching for impaired drivers and distracted drivers, because overall with this campaign, they are working towards making Canada’s roads the safest in the world.

October is pedestrian safety month and Alberta RCMP are reminding people that pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility between motorists and pedestrians.

“We’re encouraging pedestrians to use marked crosswalks whenever possible, don’t be crossing between cars on roads, especially busy roads. For motorists, we are encouraging them to observe the speed limits and always be aware of their surroundings, especially around school zones where there’s a lot of crosswalks, business areas where there are crosswalks and major intersections as well.”

Constable Hibbs says pedestrians should wear bright clothing when walking on the highways and when it’s not light out.

“Especially with the low daytime hours we get now.  It’s darker earlier in the evening and it takes longer to get light in the morning.  Make sure you dress brightly and you’re heading off to school or work”

Last October in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions, there were 17 pedestrian-related collisions, and one of them was fatal.
