Mayor receives first poppy of the Poppy Campaign

Oct 22, 2018 | 12:33 PM

Mayor Bill Given received the first poppy of the Poppy Campaign on Monday.

Given says it’s a great honour.

“The chance to represent the community in recognition of the men and women who have served our country over the years is something that is very close to my heart. I think it is especially meaningful this year. We’ve had a chance to support the Legion with the naming of Veterans Way downtown. I expect that the Remembrance Day celebrations will be one of the best ever.”

Given adds Remembrance Day is very important for Grande Prairie especially its younger residents.

“We have so many young children who are just learning about Canada’s history and about the work that the men and women who have served our country have done over the years. It’s a great opportunity for all of us to share that knowledge that we have with the younger generations and encourage them to continue that and show respect into the future.”

President of the Royal Canadian Legion #54 Maurie Pyrcz says the annual campaign is very significant for the Legion.

“We have poppies distributed throughout the City and throughout Canada. Where we allow people to donate for a poppy and then those monies go to veterans and their families in the surrounding area whenever they need it.”

The Campaign begins in the last week of October and ends on November 11.

This year’s Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at Revolution Arena.
