Police investigating bison shooting at Blueberry Mountain farm

Oct 22, 2018 | 2:41 PM

RCMP are investigating after a bison was shot and killed on a farm near Blueberry Mountain.

Rob Hampton says he and his wife were bringing their grandson home from hockey practice in Spirit River when he saw an animal on its side.

“Highway 680 runs along the south side of my farm. We were coming back home when we saw her laying in the pasture. She was 30 feet inside the fence and the main herd wasn’t around her. As soon as I saw her laying there, even from a quarter-mile away, I could see her laying there, I knew there was something wrong.”

He believes the person or people that did this knew what they were shooting at. He doesn’t think the shooter got out of their vehicle.

“She was close enough to the road, even in the dark, she wouldn’t have looked like a moose. I don’t think this has anything to do with hunting. I think these guys, or (this) guy, is driving around, probably with a beer between his legs and a rifle and just shooting indiscriminately.”

His story has been shared close to 10,000 times on Facebook. Hampton says he is overwhelmed by the response.

“I just put it out so that the neighbourhood would know what was going on and somebody convinced me to make it public. I did not expect the reaction I got. I’ve been getting messages from Texas south to Thailand.”

He adds he has never had an experience like this before and is hoping whoever did this will “wise up and cease and desist.”

Hampton says his farm is only three miles from Moonshine Lake Provincial  Park, where two moose were shot and killed October 10.
