Increase in need for services: Family Violence Prevention Network Chair

Nov 2, 2018 | 5:15 AM

Along with poppies, people may also be wearing a purple ribbon during the month of November to recognize Family Violence Prevention month.

Chair for the Prevention of Family Violence Network, Natasha Streeter says they have noticed a steady increase in demand for service delivery around family violence in the city and county.

“The trend is just increasing every year. The complexities that exist in service delivery in the northern and rural communities is more than we see in the urban centres,” says Streeter.

She says distances between service areas and the large area that they cover comes into play. That being said, the network is getting better at connecting people and dealing with those hurdles, according to Streeter.

“Luckily for us, I think we are in a space where we are able to meet the needs that we haven’t been able to before.”

The network is made up of over 30 social services agencies from all over northwestern Alberta.

Events will be held throughout the month to bring awareness to the cause. A proclamation was held at Eastlink Centre on November 1 which highlighted the theme “Reach Out, Speak”.

The Grande Prairie Storm will be wearing purple ribbons on their helmets during their November 8 game. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.

On November 13, Breakfast with the Guys will be held at Howlers Lounge at the GPRC. The free breakfast showcases local speakers Mike Anderson and Ron Regnier.

A social media campaign launches on November 21 with #GoPurple. The network is asking people to take a selfie and post the hashtag during that day.

On the last day of the month, a “Take Back the Night” walk will be held at Muskoseepi Park. It will start at 5 p.m.
