Local curlers busy at two events

Alberta scored a lopsided 14-1, six-end win over the Northwest Territories this afternoon at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in Winnipeg.
 
Kurt Balderston’s rink scored three in the fifth end and stole five in the sixth to seal the victory.
 
Alberta plays Nova Scotia later today. Both are 4-1 and tied for second in their pool.
 

Tour Challenge underway

Casey Scheidegger lost her opener at the Tour Challenge, 6-5 to Winnipeg’s Darcy Robertson Wednesday. The team, which includes Grande Prairie’s Cary-Anne McTaggart and Kristie Moore, will next play Tracy Fleury Thursday.
 
Brad Gushue and Geoff Walker face John Epping Wednesday night after a 7-4 win over Rich Ruohonen of Chaska, Minnesota Tuesday night.
 
Kevin Koe won his opener Wednesday afternoon, 6-3 over Winnipeg’s Braden Calvert. Koe will take on Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher is his next game Thursday.
 
The Tour Challenge, the third Grand Slam event of the year, is being played in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
