PRSD official picked for Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa

Nov 9, 2018 | 4:30 AM

An official with the Peace River School Division will be taking part in Remembrance Day Ceremonies in Ottawa.

Adam Murray is the Division’s Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. He also served with the Canadian military in Afghanistan and is still a member of the Canadian Rangers. He will represent the Rangers Patrol Group Sunday.

“They wanted one Ranger from Alberta to go and my name got selected. I was more than happy to say yes I’d go and I would represent the Rangers from Alberta and go to Ottawa and be in the Remembrance Day Ceremony.”

Murray says the Forces like to have all branches represented at the ceremony.  He thinks this is also a chance to remember people he served with who, in his words, “are no longer with us.”

Murray is originally from Ottawa.

“I grew up as a little kid in Ottawa. My Dad was in the service and I’ve been to the national ceremony a number of different times. This was a real special honour for me to be there because I remember when I was a kid looking up to all the veterans that served in World War II and Korea and all the serving members.”

Murray spent close to 10 months in Afghanistan in 2010.  He says one favourite memory from his time there was standing in a school built by Canadians.

“We made the town safe again and the school was free from Taliban use. It was a good feeling. It was one of those moments where you’re proud of all the people you served with, you’re proud of your country, and you’re happy that you made some type of positive difference in a country that really needs one.”

Murray says Canadian soldiers also built wells and other infrastructure.
