City councillor interested in safety on trail systems

Nov 21, 2018 | 4:13 AM

City Councillor Dylan Bressey has asked city administration to look further into the safety of citizens on the Muskoseepi trail system.

He says there was a common comment noticed on the Citizen Budget Survey that was received earlier this month.

“In the written comments, a lot (of people) talked about how they are proud of our trails, they think our trail system is an asset, but a lot are feeling unsafe accessing those trails,” he says.

“I want to look into those. I want to see what is the reality of the safety of our trails. How can we make them be safe but also feel safe?”

In his eyes, the trails are a safe place to be.

“I am excited to see the data and see what the reality is there. It is not just about being safe on the trails, it is about feeling safe,” says Bressey.

Cameras, lights and “call for help” buttons could be something council looks at in the future. Bressey says they might also look at social media campaigns to create awareness of RCMP and Enforcement Officer patrols of trails.

“For a lot of people, it is part of their regular routines to use the trails. Maybe, we could do a citizen patrol type thing.”

A report on incidents that happen on the trail system will be brought to a future city committee meeting.
