Jail time in drug case, trial dates set in separate manslaughter and shooting cases

A man charged after a Grande Prairie drug bust where more than $400,000 cash was seized has been given a four-year jail sentence.
 
Alberta Justice says Arte Abdillie Jama, also known by the street name “Fresh”, was sentenced November 20 in Calgary Court of Queen’s Bench on two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
 
Another man arrested during the same 2015 bust, Abdikarim Farah, was given a 15-month sentence in March by a Grande Prairie court on a count of possession of stolen property.
 
Both were arrested in March of 2015 after searches of two apartments and two vehicles.
 
Mounties turned up cocaine, fentanyl pills, heroin, crystal meth., and $412,000 in cash.
 
 
 
Preliminary hearing set in Peace River area manslaughter 

Preliminary hearing dates have been set for man charged with manslaughter with a firearm after another man was found dead in May of last year along Reno Road southwest of Peace River.
 
Alberta Justice says the hearing for Kyle Dubroy-Clement will take place June 4 and 5, 2019.
 
He is also facing other charges that include robbery and break and enter after the death of 20-year-old Lawrence Robert Butt.
 
His body was found inside a burned out trailer.
 
 A preliminary hearing for a Grande Prairie woman facing similar charges, Paige Eileen Burkinshaw, is set for January 8.
 
A trial for a third accused, Blake Murphy also of Grande Prairie, is due to start in September of next year.
 
Two others have already pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact. Lucas Lundstrom was given a fine and one day in jail. Bonnie Castleton was given 90 days in jail, with 89 days credit for time already spent in custody.
 
 
 
Jail time for one of four charged in stolen vehicle case

One of the suspects charged after police found a stolen vehicle with four people inside has pleaded guilty in Grande Prairie court.
 
Alberta Justice says Adam Patrick Byrne admitted to charges of possession of stolen property over $5000 and obstructing a peace officer November 9. A half-dozen other charges were withdrawn.
 
RCMP said they spotted what they thought was a stolen vehicle around midnight September 16 near Rotary House. Two women inside tried to run away while the two men were being arrested.
 
The other three people facing charges, Claude Normand Dufresne, Crystal Mary Kiyawsew, and Shauna Liza Freeman, are all due to stand trial July 8, 2019.
 
 
Trail set in violent home invasion case

A trial date has been set for a man charged after a shooting during a home invasion in June at Horse Lake First Nation.
 
Alberta Justice says the trial for Dustin MacAuley of Grande Prairie is set for July 19, 2019.
 
He is facing charges that include aggravated assault and discharging a weapon with intent.
 
RCMP said that just after midnight June 9 this year, what they describe as a violent home invasion took place.
 
One man had to be taken to hospital with a gunshot wound.
 
MacAuley is facing charges in a dozen different court cases.

 

Jail time for two people after July arrest by Spirit River RCMP

Two people arrested by SpiritRiver RCMP after police turned up some stolen property in July have each been given jail time in a Grande Prairie court.

Alberta Justice says Geoffrey Huygebaert and Nadelle Thoreson were each given 15-month terms in Grande Prairie court November 19. They both pleaded guilty to charges that included two counts of possession stolen property and dangerous driving. Three charges of possession of stolen property, along with single counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of break-in instruments, were withdrawn. Both were given six months credit for time already spent in custody.
 
RCMP said on July 24, they were approaching a vehicle that fled. They did not give chase.
 
The same vehicle was later located near Woking, stuck in some brush.
 
Further investigation turned up property that had been taken during vehicle break-ins in Grande Cache, Beaverlodge, and Grande Prairie.
