International Day of Persons with Disabilities event today in Grande Prairie

Dec 1, 2018 | 6:00 AM

Monday marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, but an event marking the occasion is being held today in Grande Prairie.

Various speakers will be talking about things like inclusive communities and pushing for change.

Mieke de Groot with Spinal Cord Injury Alberta in Grande Prairie explains this year’s theme Notice the Ability.

“There’s another community, or several communities, in Alberta that use that as the theme and our local committee decided that has such a positive tone to it and it’s something that we can extend to everyone, removing the stigma that’s attached to disabilities.”

She adds the Swan City is striving towards becoming inclusive and accessible.

“And by noticing the abilities of all people, we create an inclusive opportunity. What I’m really hoping for is that it becomes bigger.”

Everything gets going at 12:30 p.m. at Teresa Sargent Hall, located in the Montrose Cultural Centre.
