Province announces new regulations for condominiums

Dec 15, 2018 | 7:13 AM

CALGARY, AB — The provincial government has announced new regulations for condominium board governance.

Brian Malkinson, Minister of Service Alberta, announced the latest regulations under the Condominium Property Amendment Act, which was originally passed in 2014. The new regulations focus on everyday condo living, and follow consultations with condo owners and industry stakeholders.

“About one out of every five Albertans lives in a condo and our government has their back,” Malkinson said in a statement. “Last year, we unveiled stronger protections for condo buyers and now we’re introducing new rules to improve condo living. These new regulations will make life better for everyone in the industry, including condo owners, condo managers and condo boards.”

The new regulations were approved by the provincial government earlier this month. They include requirements of more notice to attender general meetings and getting topics on the agenda, revamping voting rules for owners to participate more effectively in meetings, new requirements for insurance and rental deposits and more protections for condo owners’ investments.

A full list of the new regulations can be found here.

The majority of the regulations will take effect on July 1, 2019, while others take effect on January 1, 2020 to give condominium corporations a chance to update their insurance coverage.
