Special Olympics Grande Prairie is celebrating a successful weekend in Calgary at the Alberta Winter Games. Local athletes returned from last weekend’s provincial event winning a plethora of medals.

Despite frigid temperatures for the outdoor events, the Swan City crew cleaned up in snowshoeing, winning a total of eight medals. Nikki King brought home three gold medals, in the 100, 200 and 400 metre events. Amber Shaw won the silver in both the 200 and 400 metre events and a bronze in the 100 metre. Francene Scott won Bronze in the 200 and 400 metre competitions.

The Five-Pin bowling team brought home a total of four medals in both singles and team play. Saturday was the singles event, where Steve Grandjambe and Desiree Rehm took home gold in men’s and women’s singles play. Jessica Davies finished right behind Rehm by winning silver.

Sunday was the team event, with Grande Prairie winning silver in that.

The Floor Hockey team battled back from dropping their first three games of the tournament to bring home the bronze medal in the A division, the top division in competition.

Despite injuries slowing them down late in the tournament, the Curling squad was able to come away with another Bronze for the Swan City organization, winning three of their five matches.

Coach Kelly Hollahan said in a Facebook Post that they thank all the athletes and coaches for their hard work and effort.
