AHS offering QuitCore program to help locals quit tobacco

Feb 16, 2019 | 6:00 AM

Alberta Health Services will be offering a free, six-week workshop for residents who wish to kick their tobacco habit.

Set to begin March 6, every Wednesday at 6 p.m. QuitCore will offer an hour and a half session at the Grande Prairie Library.

According to AHS, tobacco is the leading cause of preventable disability, disease and premature death in Alberta. Their statistics also show it accounts for more than 3,000 deaths per year across the province.

AHS helps to provide locals with the tools and support needed for individuals to live a tobacco-free lifestyle. Some of the methods they offer include telephone and online support services, one-on-one counselling and group cessation programs like QuitCore.

The tobacco-cessation program will be led by trained professionals. QuitCore teaches tobacco users how to develop a proper quitting plan in addition to providing information and strategies on how to manage recovery symptoms, stress and future relapse.

QuitCore launched in 2008 and it’s designed to connect people in the program to help create a community for those trying to quit. The program is now offered in over 25 communities province-wide.

Additionally, those enrolled in the program will be able to access financial support for nicotine replacement therapy.

AHS findings suggest that therapy helps to increase the chances of individuals successfully quitting, in comparison to using just one single method alone.

Alberta Health Services plans and delivers health supports for over four million adults and children in Alberta. The provincial health authorities’ mission is to, “provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.”

To register for QuitCore, visit The Grande Prairie Public Library, located at 101, 9839 – 103 Avenue or call 1-866-710-QUIT (7848) toll-free.
