2019 Cultural Fair set for Family Day

Feb 17, 2019 | 6:00 AM

The 2019 Cultural Fair is set to take place tomorrow, organized by the Diversity, Equity and Human Rights Committee.

The committee, which is made up of volunteer teachers from all three local school districts, started this event as a way to celebrate cultural diversity in the Grande Prairie area.

“We wanted a chance to invite families to see the teachers volunteer, that they are out in the community making a difference,” says Chair of the committee Suzanne Lessard. “And we wanted to give a voice to different organizations in town and give them a bit of publicity.”

The event will feature activities such as face painting, a bouncy castle, performances from dancers and music from all over the world.

Beaver Elder Bruce McAllister will also be speaking to attendees about the history of the Beaver People in the region. According to Lessard, McAllister played a big role in the inception of this event.

“He expressed an interest in sharing the story behind the Beaver people, and what happened to them in our local community,” explained Lessard. “As teachers got more involved in getting him to talk, then it kind of spiraled into ‘we can make this a bigger event’, and also make it a family event.”

Lessard is hoping that this event can become an annual fair, as this is the first of its kind put on by the committee.

City Councilor Kevin O’Toole will also be on hand represented council and will introduce McAllister at the event.

The 2019 Cultural Fair goes from 2 to 4 P.M. at Roy Bickell School on Family Day.
