Storm earn first playoff series win since 2010

Mar 15, 2018 | 6:14 AM

The Grande Prairie Storm are off to the 2nd round of the playoffs.

This following a dominating performance over the Sherwood Park Crusaders in game 5, walking away with a 6-1 victory.

The Storm came out flying in the first period, peppering Crusaders netminder Brandon Vogel with plenty of rubber early on.

Grande Prairie would get rewarded 7:56 into the opening frame as Edouard Michaud would bury his 6th goal of the post-season to vault the home side to a 1-0 lead.

Less than four minutes later the Storm would double that lead thanks to Connor Blake, who received a pass just over the blue line and would make no mistake with a blistering wrist shot into the top corner to make it 2-0.

The Storm would face three straight penalty kills early on in the 2nd period, but the Grande Prairie penalty killers would limit the Crusaders to just one quality scoring chance.

On Grande Prairie’s 2nd man advantage of the night, it wouldn’t take long before the home side extended their lead.

The Storm’s top unit would work the puck around the outside of the ice until Jonothan Hader was left alone in front of the net where he would roof it, and make it 3-0.

The man advantage would click for its 2nd goal of the night in the final minute of the middle stanza with Eduoard Michaud rocketing his 2nd of the night past Vogel.

Grande Prairie had a 4-0 advantage after two periods of play and had a 30-15 advantage in the shot department.

The third period wasn’t much different for the home side as they continued to dominate.

Noah Walters would extend the lead just 1:37 into the third period to send the more than 1,800 fans in attendance into a frenzy.

Sherwood Park would break Ethan Slobodzian’s shutout bid late in the third period, but that was as close as they would come as the Storm would earn a 6-1 victory.

The win marks the first series win for the Grande Prairie Storm since 2010.

The Storm will now move on to the 2nd round of the playoffs to face the Spruce Grove Saints.

The series will begin on Friday night in Spruce Grove with game one.

Games three and four will be back in Grande Prairie on Monday and Tuesday.
