Grande Prairie Airport CEO hoping for second security line

Mar 28, 2018 | 4:13 PM

The Grande Prairie Airport is seeing movement in the security check-point lineups during their peak times.

The facility continues to deal with long wait times. CEO Brian Grant says approval from Transport Canada and the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) has allowed them to make small renovations that have had an impact on peak periods. According to a Facebook post, there has been a 25 per cent decrease in wait times in these lineups following a tweak to their security layout last week which includes an expanded area for filling bins.

“We were getting into the areas of 50 to 52 minutes of people waiting in line to get screened in the Pre-Board Screening(PBS) process. We started to work with CATSA and Transport Canada to let them know there was an (issue) here. It has taken us since the better part of November to get some action from them, but we are feeling encouraged that we at least have a short-term solution,” said Grant.

Grant calls the adjustments that have been made so far “short-term”.

“The important thing is that we get a long-term solution which is a second PBS security line so that when we do hit the peaks, we have the ability to open up the second line and double the capacity.”

Statistics have been provided to CATSA and Grant says they have acknowledged that there is a need for a second one. The CEO is expecting to hear back in the next two weeks.

Although there has been the slight decrease in wait-times, he is recommending people show up 90 minutes before their flights.

“We’ve helped the situation a little bit, but we still want everyone to remain vigilant and come early.”

A week before the tweaks people continued to post online about the wait times.
