Drysdale disappointed in legislative committee vote

The MLA for GP Wapiti says he is disappointed with a vote at a legislative standing committee.

Wayne Drsydale had asked for an all-party review of the Property Rights Advocate Act, legislation that governs things like surface rights.

Instead, the New Democrat members of the Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship voted for a government-only review.

Drysdale thinks a closed-door review is “typical” of how the government does things.

“They don’t consult with land-owners or the public, they try to just do things behind closed doors and then come out with it and try and ram it through. We thought we should do it in an all-party committee and have public input in it.”

He adds this “kind of reminds me of Bill 6, where the government just all-of-a-sudden comes up with something without consulting with property owners or landowners and just rams it through without any public discussion.”

Drsydale tried getting the idea of having the review done by 2019 included, but that was also rejected. He wonders if this means it is being delayed until after the next election. He says having an all-party review comes with a set deadline for completion.

Drysdale adds there are things in that legislation that need to be looked at.

“You know, the Property Rights Advocate kind of wanted to have a little more teeth. I’m not sure if that’s the right thing to do, but it was something that we could have discussed and had a public input in it.”

Drysdale says surface rights around wind farms are becoming a big issue in other parts of Alberta.
