New County of Grande Prairie Council to be sworn in today

Oct 23, 2017 | 11:47 AM

The new County of Grande Prairie Council will be sworn in today.

There will be one new face this term.

Linda Waddy was elected to replace Brock Smith, who did not run again.

Incumbents Daryl Beeston, Leanne Beaupre, Ross Sutherland, Bob Marshall, Peter Harris, and Corey Beck were all re-elected. Karen Rosvold and Harold Bulford are back by acclamation.

Sutherland says he would like to finish some of the things that are already underway.

“Re-building and paving of roads in my area and some municipal water lines. I’m very excited about this Tri-Municipal Partnership that we’re about to enter here. It’s going to be great for everybody involved.”

Beck is expecting a lot of challenges this term.

“We have to complete our ICFs (Inter-municipal Cooperation Frameworks) which is something the province is imposing on us with all the municipalities that touch our borders. There’ll be a lot of work to do. Also, looking to continue my work if I can on the Regional Recreation Committee that we’re starting up within the County of Grande Prairie.”

Rosvold wants to keep advocating for rural communities.

“We’ve got a lot of rural hamlets that need some help and that’s kind of my focus is keeping these rural hamlets alive and keeping our rural economy. Whether it be industrial or agricultural, that rural area is the backbone of our economy in our county, so we need to keep them strong, so that’s my focus.”
