Klaus refused lie detector test, DNA sample following family’s deaths

Oct 26, 2017 | 10:03 AM

Jason Klaus refused to take a lie detector test or provide police with a DNA sample after learning he was a suspect in the deaths of his parents and sister.

Klaus, now 42, and his friend Joshua Frank are on trial in Red Deer Provincial Court for three counts of first degree murder and arson. Day three of the trial took place Wednesday in Red Deer Provincial Court.

Police believe Gordon, Sandra and Monica Klaus were killed before their Castor-area farmhouse was set on fire in December 2013.

The following month, Sgt. Rob Kropp with RCMP Major Crimes South informed Klaus he was a suspect.

Wednesday, Kropp told court that police began tapping Klaus’ phones on Jan. 23, 2014.

When the two met in person on Feb. 16 of that year Klaus told Kropp that his lawyer advised him not to take a lie detector test. Klaus never has to this day.

On April 2, 2014, Kropp and another officer arrived at Klaus’ home unannounced to ask if he would voluntarily submit a DNA sample. The brief conversation ended with Klaus refusing the request, adding he would no longer speak to police without his lawyer present

Also on Wednesday, Kropp confirmed that Sandra’s remains were never found. Klaus had claimed his lawyers told him RCMP were likely keeping the remains in secret as a strategic move for their investigation.

The trial continues Thursday.
