Local grass fire started off side road

Oct 26, 2017 | 9:49 AM

While a cause remains unclear, the origin point for a Wednesday night grass fire in Medicine Hat has been found.

The fire was first spotted around 6:30 p.m., south of Saamis Drive heading into Redcliff. Police blocked off part of the road to allow emergency crews to work, later re-opening the road once the fire was under control.

Multiple fire crews went to the scene to fight the fire, including three trucks from the Medicine Hat Fire Service.

According to Platoon Chief Joe Greenan with the Medicine Hat Fire Department, the call about a fast-moving grass fire in the area came in around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday night, with the fire fully extinguished by 9:57 p.m.

Liutenant Scott Berg confirmed that the blaze began just off 20 Street Southeast, a gravel road branching off from Saamis Drive. The flames burned southeast, heading out from the road and into the nearby coulee.

Berg indicated that a nearby crop field did not suffer any damage, but some fence posts and power poles were scorched by the fire. A clear cause is not yet known. However, Berg did say that the location of the fire’s origin point “leads in certain directions”.

There were no injuries reported from the fire.
