Halloween safety tips from local RCMP

Oct 31, 2017 | 9:17 AM

Trick-or-treaters will be taking over streets tonight prompting local RCMP to offer some Halloween Safety reminders.

Trick Or Treat, Give Me Something Good To Eat…

  • Ensure costumes have a perfectly frightful fit. Make sure the outfit length does not pose a tripping hazard.
  • Costumes should be bright and reflective so motorists can easily see children.
  • Wearing a mask can reduce vision; opt for makeup instead.
  • Carry a flashlight to help see where you are going, and a cell phone for emergencies.
  • Children should be accompanied by a parent, adult family member, an older sibling or trusted family friend. If children are mature enough to go out on their own, ensure they are in groups of at least three.
  • If children are going out without an adult, confirm their “loot” route beforehand.
  • Remind children not to enter a house nor vehicle of someone they do not know.
  • Only go to homes with the porch light on.
  • Children should be well fed prior to “trick or treating” to reduce the temptation of eating collected candy before it can be checked by an adult.
  • Demonstrate to your children by using the sidewalk and crossing streets at corners or crosswalks. Remind them to look both ways before crossing a street.
  • Remind children not to run out between parked cars.
  • Avoid alleys, dark parking areas, or vacant lots.

My Other Car Is A Broom…

Motorists play a large part in our Trick or Treater’s safety

  • Drive slowly through residential areas and watch for children that may be using cross walks or on the road
  • Carefully enter and exit driveways and alleys.
  • Watch for children darting out from houses and cars.
  • When approaching intersections, be extra diligent in coming to full and complete stops; proceeding slowly thereafter.
  • Put down your mobile device. Avoid distractions by waiting until you have parked to call, text, or surf.
  • Do not drink and Drive.

Fangtastic Haunt Owners…

Tips for Treat Givers

  • Keep a clear path from the road/sidewalk to your front door. Remove any items that may pose a tripping hazard.
  • Leave the porch lights on.
  • Having Jack-o-Lanterns? Consider lighting them with battery-powered lights instead of candles.  If you choose to use candles, ensure the pumpkins are on a sturdy surface away from walkways, doorsteps, and curtains.  Candles should be supervised by an adult at all times.
  • Pets should be kept inside and away from trick or treaters.
  • Deter vandalism by parking your vehicle(s) in a locked garage (when possible) and putting garbage away.
  • Report any suspicious activities to the RCMP.

The Grande Prairie RCMP is wishing everyone a safe and “Boo”tiful night.
