Moor, Vazquez questionable for Toronto FC’s rematch with New York Red Bulls

Toronto FC defender Drew Moor and playmaker Victor Vazquez, who both left Game 1 of the MLS Eastern Conference semifinal early with injuries, are feeling better but are still questionable for Sunday’s rematch with the New York Red Bulls.

Top-seeded Toronto holds a 2-1 edge over the sixth-seeded Red Bulls heading into the weekend game at BMO Field.

Moor was replaced at halftime Monday at Red Bull Arena after rolling his ankle, Vazquez came off in the 65th minute after taking a hip to the groin area in a collision.

“Both have progressed since the game for sure. (They’re) feeling better,” coach Greg Vanney told reporters Wednesday. “We have them as questionable right now. But in talking to them today, they definitely have made progress which is a good sign.”

Vanney also said it was “mind-boggling” that Brazilian midfielder Felipe was not called for a foul on the play that injured Vazquez.

“Is it dirty? I don’t know,” he added. “There’s a fine line, I think, between dirty and being physical and competing. I will leave that for everybody else to decide. I think Felipe knows what he’s doing, he’s stepping in to try to body-block the player. I think it’s the ref’s job to call a foul.”

Vazquez tried to play through the pain but was clearly labouring and was replaced by Jonathan Osorio.

Neither of the injured players trained Wednesday.

“Our hope is that they continue to make progress and that prognosis gets better as we get closer to Sunday,” Vanney said.

Moore was replaced Monday by Nick Hagglund, who had a fine game.
