Clocks fall back this Sunday

Nov 3, 2017 | 1:50 PM

This Sunday Albertans will be turning back their clocks by one hour and this means darker mornings.

Doctor Albert De Villiers with Alberta Health Services in Grande Prairie has tips on preparing yourself for the switch.

“It takes a few days to get used to it. I just say to switch your clocks as soon as you can. The day before you can live in the new time…if you know what I mean. Go to bed a little bit earlier or a little later depending on if it is spring or fall to make sure you adjust as soon as possible.”

He says some people develop “seasonal depression” or “Seasonal Affective Disorder” when it starts to get cold and dark in the winter.

“I always tell people to get out as much as you can in the winter. As soon as there is some sun, put on snowshoes, skis or winter boots…walk around the block, it doesn’t have to be expensive. You could get out in the backyard and just sit in the snow. Just get out.”

Symptoms include being sad or grumpy as well as being disinterested in usual activities. People also tend to eat more.

De Villiers recommends seeing a doctor if you think you may have “seasonal depression”.
