New additions for Northern Spirit Light Show

Nov 15, 2017 | 1:02 PM

The Northern Spirit Light Show will be a bit different for the upcoming season.

The Peace Draft Horse Club has purchased second-hand lights to change up some of the 230 displays.

“We spent about $25,000 and bought a bunch of these lights that were used at Hawrelak Park in Edmonton. They shut down so we bought a bunch of their displays. It will be really exciting for people to see,” explained Gordon Frentz, president of the club.

All proceeds from the more than month-long event go to local charities. Last year, there was more than $55,000 donated to local groups.

“One of them that was new last year that we were pretty happy to have sponsored was the hot-lunch program for schools. Nineteen schools each got $1000. That is $19,000 right there for the lunch program for children that go to school without lunches.”

It takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes to get through the show at Evergreen Park and there is a choice of taking a horse-drawn wagon or car. The gates open for the season on Friday, November 17 at 6 p.m. with wagons running until 9 p.m. and costing $5 a person. Vehicles are allowed through until 10 p.m. with a cost of $15.

The light show will run every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until December 3. From December 8 to 31, the event will run every day besides Christmas Day.
