MLA Drysdale explains vote against GSA bill

Nov 16, 2017 | 2:27 PM

The two Grande Prairie MLA’s voted against Bill 24 yesterday, legislation that strengthens rules around gay-straight alliances in schools.

G.P. Wapiti MLA Wayne Drysdale says he is not against GSA’s.

“It’s pretty misleading. The Bill reads support GSAs. Well, that was Bill 10. We all voted unanimously for that and, right up front, I support GSAs, I support the LGBTQ community and I don’t believe in outing kids.”

He doesn’t think Bill 24 “was a very good bill. It wasn’t presented properly and it (means) you either got to support parents or you got to support LGBTQ and I don’t think it should be one of the other. I don’t see why you can’t support both.”

Drysdale adds teachers should be the decision makers.

“They should be the ones making that decision, not politicians or the law. To say it’s illegal for a teacher to talk to a parent about a child that is suffering is not in the best interest of children in most cases.”

The bill closes loopholes the NDP government says some schools have been using to delay or deny students who try to set up the peer support clubs.
