County of Grande Prairie adding firefighters

Nov 21, 2017 | 4:30 AM

County of Grande Prairie Council has approved hiring two new firefighters.

County Fire Chief Trevor Grant says one would be full-time staff, the other a contract employee.

“It’s helping us with reduction of overtime costs. When a firefighter goes off on training or on vacation or on a leave of absence, we’re typically having to fill with an overtime rate. Having these positions would allow us to fill those positions without additional cost.”

He adds they would work out of two different stations.

“They’ll be fairly dynamic between the Clairmont and Dunes fire stations. It would just be depending on where the need is for the coverage at the time.”

Grant hopes to have the new people in place soon.

“January 1 would be when we’d be moving forward with the filling of those positions. We’ll do an internal recruitment for candidates that do currently work for us already in a part-time or a casual basis.”
