Grande Prairie Art Gallery welcomes new curator

Nov 21, 2017 | 11:48 AM

Derrick Chang has become the new Curator, Exhibitions and Collections, at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie.

He started on Nov. 1, and for Chang, it represents getting back to his roots.

“I grew up in Calgary and was kind of a Prairie boy at heart. So coming to Grande Prairie was kind of a homecoming for me,” he said.

He’s an art historian, teacher and writer. He had been in Vancouver, and got his Masters in Curatorial Studies from the University of British Columbia.

“I think art makes us ask a lot of questions in new and interesting ways,” he said.

Executive Director Jeff Erbach is pleased to have Chang on board.

“Derrick is passionate about his work, well-connected throughout Canada, well-versed in a variety of disciplines and is notably drawn to a wide diversity of perspectives,” he wrote in a press release.

“He’ll have a lasting impact on our gallery and we’re incredibly excited about the future.”

Chang will have a number of focuses in his new role, and is still getting used to his new surrounding.

“I’m looking forward to developing programs … that get people active and engaged.”
