Alberta Government Maintaining Highways this Winter

Dec 7, 2017 | 4:30 AM

Unpredictable weather is the norm for Alberta at this time of the year.

As a result, the Alberta Government works with their maintenance contractors throughout the winter months to make sure highways are as clear and safe as possible.

“Alberta Transportation works closely with highway maintenance contractors to keep Alberta highways clear and open to travel. They are out there, in force, in challenging conditions, working to ensure the roads are safe for the travelling public and for their own families, friends, and neighbours. We can all play a role in keeping our roads safe by slowing down and driving to conditions,” stated Alberta Minister of Transportation Brian Mason during Wednesday’s press conference.

In total, the Alberta Government has 31,000 kilometres to take care of in Provincial Highways.

Minister Mason went on to say during winter storms, priority is given to major highway corridors when it comes to maintenance from snowplows.

During the winter months, the number of collisions in the province rises by more than 20 per cent.
