Candy Cane Awareness Campaign stops vehicles in Grande Prairie

Dec 7, 2017 | 9:35 AM

The Candy Cane check stop is once again in Grande Prairie.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson Amber Bagan says the annual holiday safety information campaign will be set up at 100 Street between 121 and 124 Avenues.

“The big take away from this is to focus on drunk driving and having a safe holiday season. Some people don’t realize how little it takes to affect their capabilities and if you are getting pulled over for an RCMP check stop, to be between that 0.05 and 0.08 doesn’t take much, it can be one or two drinks.”

The check stop also involves local RCMP, the Grande Prairie Fire Department and Crime Prevention from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

“And what we’ll be doing is just stopping traffic, you’ll see our lights on and we just want to be able to stop (drivers), smile, hand you a candy cane and a pamphlet and we are just spreading the word about the prevention of drunk driving through this holiday season.”
