Tips from AHS for holiday stress

Dec 11, 2017 | 6:25 AM

The holidays can be a stressful time of year for people.

Many factors play a part, like the hustle and bustle of the season, lack of sunlight and stress of shopping.

“Don’t over do it,” said Medical Officer if Health Dr. Albert De Villiers.  “Because that adds a lot of stress if you spend more than you want to spend.”

He also says if you’re hosting a party don’t overextend yourself and being organized is a big help.

“Make sure you share the tasks if you invite a bunch of people, get them to bring food as well.  Just don’t make it too hard on yourself.”

People who are grieving also find this time of the year very difficult.

“When we get to this time of the year people remember their loved ones, because they used to be here last year, they used to be here a few years ago around the table with everyone.  And it’s a difficult time for people who’ve lost somebody in the last few years, or lost somebody any time because they keep on missing them.”

Dr. De Villiers says there are lots of services in town and people should go wherever they feel comfortable.  He encourages those feeling overwhelmed to reach out to psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, and AHS Mental Health Services in the community.
