Legion asks for city help due to flooding

Dec 19, 2017 | 2:10 PM

The Grande Prairie Royal Canadian Legion needs help keeping dry this season.

According to Donor Wall Chair Dan Christenson, some water runoff is causing problems for the building on 101 Avenue.

“We have groundwater — because our back sidewalk is lower than the area — and because of melting conditions, it’s leaking through our wall,” he said.

The Donor Wall Campaign is currently ongoing as the legion tries to renovate, and they fear water coming into the building could cause damage.

Christenson addressed the Infrastructure & Protective Services Committee on Tuesday to ask for help.

“Right now, because it’s cement wall and cement floor it’s not a real issue. But we have a rug there, and because it continually gets saturated, it can cause mould and mildew.”

Though not an immediate threat, he thinks problems could arise in the future if the problem isn’t fixed.

“We’re waiting to hear back from the city. The mayor did mention a possible grant,” he said.

“But in the spring, we’re going to have to dig the back sidewalk up and coat the wall or something so water doesn’t come in.”
