Muskoseepi Park fireworks cancelled for NYE

Dec 29, 2017 | 1:41 PM

UPDATE: The City of Grande Prairie has cancelled the fireworks over the reservoir on December 31 due to cold weather. They could be rescheduled for New Year’s Day. The indoor activities are still a go in the park.

The wind and cold could impact what the festivities at Muskoseepi Park look like on New Year’s Eve.

If the temperature is minus 25 Celsius, the horse and sleigh rides will not be running during the event, according to Carla Wells Program Event Manager. As of Friday afternoon, Environment Canada has a Sunday forecast of minus 31.

“The rest of it is set to go. Our fireworks could be cancelled with winds of more than 45 km/hr. As of right now, they are scheduled to go with the cold weather,” explained Wells. “If it got beyond extreme, we could have cancelations. We are asking people to check our Facebook page for Muskoseepi Park. We will be updating that if there are any changes the day of.”

The city considers “beyond extreme” as anything colder than minus 35.

The 15 to 20-minute firework show is set to go over the reservoir in the park at 10 p.m. on December 31. Wells recommends anyone heading to the event should dress for the weather.

Wells explains that there are indoor activities happening indoors during the day as well.
