Fritz called up by Islanders

Jan 2, 2018 | 6:32 AM

A former Grande Prairie Storm captain and Grande Prairie native has been recalled by the New York Islanders.

Forward Tanner Fritz was playing for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League.

Fritz is ranked fifth in scoring in the AHL, with 40 points in 61 games with AHL Bridgeport.

This would mark his major league debut for the Islanders.

“I’m excited. I’ve worked very hard to get to this position & hopefully I can take advantage of the opportunity,” he said during a media scrum this morning in the Islanders dressing room.

“I just want to play the same way I was playing in Bridgeport with a lot of pace, speed, energy, finish my checks, play a smart 200 ft game & help the team win.”

They’re currently 20-15-4 and sit in the second wildcard spot as we enter January.

The 26-year-old was signed in April 2016 to a two-way deal.
