20th anniversary Peace Country Beef Congress underway

Jan 5, 2018 | 3:06 PM

The 20th Peace Country Beef Congress is underway at the Lakota Agri-Plex in Dawson Creek.

Director Colby Klassen says the number of cattle at the show has gone up this year.

“I’m not sure of the exact number, but I know it’s up over 100 entries. That’s one of the highest numbers we’ve had in recent years, so that’s a real positive thing that we’ve got going here.”

He says warmer weather is a factor in the increase.

“So, just the weather, the weekend. There’s a lot of excitement going on about it, just the way the show went last year. It’s starting to get to be exciting for people to want to come back to it. We’ve tried to focus on the 20-year anniversary thing a bit, so we put a little more excitement in. There’s a couple of the classes that have bigger prizes and I think that really helped out, getting some extra entries.”

Klassen adds cattle markets are good these days.

“It seems like it’s been staying pretty steady. I think that’s the ideal thing to have, just steady and not up and down.”

Day 2 will go tomorrow. The trade show will open at 9:30 a.m.
