Intersections a focus for Enforcement Services in Grande Prairie

Jan 6, 2018 | 5:17 AM

Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is putting a focus on intersection safety in the month of January.

In 2016, 89 percent of collision in Grande Prairie happened at intersections. Sgt. Supervisor Ross Gear explains that driving properly and safely is important in reducing collisions.

“In Alberta, the most common driver errors include making a left turn across the path of an oncoming vehicle and committing a stop sign or traffic light violation. Speed is also a contributing factor when going through intersections. Failure to stop at an intersection or red light can result in a fine of up to $388 and three demerit points,” said Gear.

Following too closely is also noted as a common driver error that causes fatal collisions or injuries, according to Alberta Transportation.

A list provided by the City of Grande Prairie states that the highest risk intersection in Grande Prairie is at 100 Avenue and 116 Street. Following behind that intersection, ranked in order, is 84 Avenue and 108 Street, 116 Avenue and 100 Street, 124 Avenue and 100 Street, and 132 Avenue and 100 Street. (Map provided below)

Enforcement Services provides tips on driving safely through intersections including keeping them clear to let traffic go if the light changes and remember who has the right-of-way at four-way stops.

On top of focusing on intersections, officers will also be on the look-out for off-highway vehicles that shouldn’t be in the city limits. Gear reminds residents that use of things like snowmobiles is not prohibited on streets, boulevards, sidewalks, ditches, alleys, parkland, and trails.

The fine for non-compliance can be a fine of up to $250 and possible seizure of the vehicle.
