Grande Prairie RCMP investigate death of young girl

Jan 12, 2018 | 8:24 AM

Local Mounties are investigating the death of a child.

The 23-month-old girl was brought to the QEII hospital Tuesday morning.

“This week because there were police cars outside of the residence securing the scene, we had gotten some media calls that were generated from it.  So instead of leaving the public not knowing what was going on and the media not knowing what was going on, we decided that it would be best to put out a very vague release as to what happened,” explained Constable Michelle Mosher with the Grande Prairie RCMP.

An autopsy was done on Wednesday at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton, but a cause of death has yet to be determined. Officials are now waiting on a toxicology report, which could take a year for results to come back.

Mosher said police treat any sudden death of a child as suspicious.

Police say they will not be releasing the name of the child.
