Storm’s newest addition in the line-up tonight in Fort McMurray

The Grande Prairie Storm will play their first game since the CJHL trade deadline tonight as they head to Fort McMurray to battle the Oil Barons.

The Storm just made the one trade ahead of the roster freeze on January 10th, as they sent Parker Smyth and future considerations to the Battleford North Stars of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League for 19-year-old forward Jared Power.

” It’s a hockey trade. You are giving up a good player in Parker Smyth, but probably a different player than Jared Power. Parker is a point guy too. With Power, you’re probably getting a little more speed. A little more of a pure goal scorer ” said General Manager of the Grande Prairie Storm Mark Bomersback.

The Storm are one of the highest scoring teams in the league but felt that you can never have too much of it.

A big part of the trade also was the fact Power is a 19-year-old and will be a valuable player for the club next season.

” Next year obviously I think he will be a top scorer in this league, ” added Bomersback.

It was a difficult year to get trades done in the AJHL due to the parity, and as a result, prices were high.

” Especially in the North division. You look and there really no big moves. All of the big name players in the South moved to the North. You wouldn’t be calling a North team to try and get one of their better players. So teams were calling the South teams and teams out of province to try and acquire something. ” noted Bomersback

Going into the trade deadline the club was hopeful to add a forward and a blueliner, and they did that with the addition of Power and Brendan Kwiatkowski, who returned to the team following his release from the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League.

Power and Kwiatkowski will be with the Storm when they battle the Fort McMurray Oil Barons tonight in the third meeting of the season between the two rivals.

Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.

Grande Prairie will conclude the trip Saturday night in Spruce Grove.
