Trial ordered for former Red Deer teacher accused of sexual exploitation, luring

Jan 17, 2018 | 1:20 PM

A trial has been ordered for a former Red Deer high school teacher facing sex-related charges.

Rhett Lundgren, 40, is charged with one count of two counts of luring a child under 18, sexual exploitation, make, printing or publishing child porn, and distributing or selling child porn.

Lundgren was a teacher at Hunting Hills High School in 2008 when the alleged offences took place.

Red Deer RCMP charged Lundgren, 40, in January 2017 after a female victim, who was 17 when the incidents in question occurred, came forward. Lundgren pleaded not guilty and has elected to be tried by judge alone.

A preliminary hearing was held in Red Deer Provincial Court on Wednesday where Justice Jim Hunter ordered that the case proceeds to trial. Trial dates will be set in March.

Both the name of the complainant and details from the preliminary hearing are under publication ban.

Lundgren is also facing child pornography charges out of Saskatoon, where he also worked as a high school teacher. He was arrested in Dec. 2016 and charged with accessing child pornography and arranging to commit a sexual offence against a child. Saskatoon police said the target was a child between the age of eight and 10.

Lundgren’s Saskatoon trial is scheduled for June 18 – 26 of this year.
