QEII introduces White Rose program

Jan 18, 2018 | 4:30 AM

The QEII Regional Hospital has announced it has enrolled in the White Rose program to help families who are going through the process of losing a loved one.

” So when they are in the hospital and they are saying goodbye to their loved ones, we have initiated a program that provides several practical comforts for the families, ” shared Stacy Greening, Senior Operating Officer for the QEII Hospital.

Some of those basic comforts include a free parking pass for the duration of the stay, a nutrition card for snacks, and materials such as toys for the kids and cards for adults.

In addition to the battery-operated candle on the patient’s deck, staff will also put an image of a white rose on the door of the patient’s room.

This lets both staff and visitors at the hospital know that the patient in the room is actively palliative.

Greening noted this program is in place in other parts of the province, which is where they got the idea.

” We have a few cases of this particular initiative being launched in other sites across the province. So, one of our educators on site here, Terry Donald, had the idea of bringing it to the QEII Hospital and obviously it is something which brings a lot of value to the patient’s families. “

The primary focus of the program is to provide support for the families, but it also helps support the staff who are taking care of the patients.
