Motorists warned of the poor travel conditions on highways

Local RCMP are warning motorists of poor travel conditions as the Grande Prairie region remains under a snowfall warning. The snow can cause reduced visibility and slippery conditions on area highways.

“This is just a warning at this time,” explained Corporal Chris Warren. “There haven’t been any closures of any area highways, but we have seen snowfall accumulating on highways which is causing some white-out conditions, reduced visibility and of course some slippery sections.”

The public is advised to drive with caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

“If you don’t need to be out there, it’s probably best to avoid being on the roads and let our plows and crews do the work needed to clear the roadways. If you must travel, drive to conditions and be safe out there,” said Cpl. Warren.

For those who have to be on area roads and highways, RCMP have some reminders:

– Drive to current road and weather conditions

– Turn your vehicle head lights on regardless of time of day

– Allow plenty of time for travel

– Dress for the weather

– Clear your vehicle of snow and ice

– Top up washer fluid and fuel up your vehicle before departing

– Have an emergency roadside kit with emergency blankets and a cell phone in case of an accident

The snowfall warning was issued Thursday, with 20-30 cm of snow possible before Saturday morning.
