CALGARY, AB — Cenovus Energy says a worker has died at one of its facilities in northern Alberta on Tuesday.

The company said the incident took place at the company’s Christina Lake oil sands site, located about 350 kilometres northeast of Edmonton at approximately 10:20 p.m.

According to the company, an incident occurred involving a hauling truck while a drilling rig was being moved on the site, which resulted in the death of a worker employed by a third-party contracting company.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the worker’s family, friends and co-workers,” the statement reads.

The identity of the worker is not being released publicly at this time.

Cenovus says it’s conducting a full investigation into the cause of the incident and has notified the appropriate authorities.
