Peace municipalities working on joint development plan

Feb 20, 2018 | 12:03 PM

Area municipalities are working on Intermunicipal Development Plans as requested by the provincial government.

County of Grande Prairie Reeve Leanne Beaupre says the purpose is to address future growth opportunities between the County, Towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, and Wembley, as well as the Village of Hythe.

“We’ve hired a consultant to do a lot of the work for it. We’ll be constructing a joint committee so that we can make sure that we’ve captured everything (all) municipalities are looking for.”

She adds while the work has already started, a lot is left to do.

“We’ve got eight to do. You know, it does become fairly onerous time-wise. We will be giving updates regularly and the open houses will be posted well in advance for people to be able to attend.”

The first round of landowner and public engagement is expected to start in April and May.

The province mandated in it’s new Municipal Government Act that neighbouring municipalities must have such plans in place by April 2020.

The City and County of Grande Prairie have had an Intermunicipal Development Plan in place since 1982.
