County prepares for winter storm

Mar 1, 2018 | 5:27 AM

With the winter storm warning in effect, the County’s Public Works Director Dale Van Volkingburgh says crews are working to open the existing roads that have been drifted in due to the strong winds.

“We have cats out there working so that we can get the (snow) banks far enough so that the next snowfall and the next wind, hopefully, there is room for it because obviously, we can’t be on every road on every day so we are trying to buy time by pushing the (snow) banks back further at this point.”

He says at one point crews were running out of room to put the snow.

Van Volkingburgh adds crews will be out as soon as the snow starts to fall.

“We shut down other aspects of our crews that maybe aren’t crucial to keeping the roads open so then we shuffle them from other programs and to running the equipment to keep the roads open so it is kind of doubling up people on each piece of equipment.”
