Crime Prevention offers conference that focuses on building resiliency in youth

Mar 15, 2018 | 5:30 AM

Resiliency in youth will be the focus of a conference being put on by Crime Prevention this week.

Anyone who is involved with youth, including parents, mentors, coaches, and teachers are invited to attend.

Local service experts will be addressing topics of bullying, mental health, co-parenting, and addictions.

The keynote speaker is Monique Gray Smith.

“Monique is all about building resiliency.  She’s from an Indigenous background and she has a unique perspective on the importance of resiliency and how trauma impacts children and how we can go about helping children and youth and families overcome the trauma,” explained Cheryl George with Crime Prevention.

George says one of the main causes of crime in Grande Prairie is when there is break down of the family unit.

“We just want to build the community connections with the families, the service providers that are there, and for any families that feel like they’re struggling, they’re overwhelmed or need information, or they don’t have the skills or things they can use in everyday life to help build those connections with the community and within their own family.”

It’s a three-party event with an agency workshop all day Friday, a free presentation for the community Friday evening and an all-day conference Saturday aimed at anyone who is involved with youth.
