Local photographer lands contract with National Geographic

A local photographer has sold some of his work to an internationally-known organization.

Amos Wiebe captured a rare sight of a pair of lynx fighting up a tree in the forest south of Grande Prairie. His posting of the sight went viral on the internet.

Wiebe says that led to National Geographic contacting him Monday morning.

“Sounds like for sure they will be posting on all their web and social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. So that’s pretty exciting.”

He calls the deal with National Geographic a dream.

“It’s a dream gig for any photographer to have work published in National Geographic. To have any agreement in place and to have content that will be posted on there in the future, is definitely an honour.”

Wiebe says lynx are elusive, so this is something that humans would rarely get to see.

“I had spoken with a really experienced person at National Geographic that studies lynx. He says that was actually a male up in the tree. The male that was on the ground with the female on the ground was trying to run the other male out of that territory. He kept treeing him because he was already paired up with a female.”

Wiebe first thought it was a male and female lynx fighting in the tree.
